Does Your Home Contain Asbestos?
Some vermiculite insulation contains asbestos fibres, which are extremely hazardous to your health. If your home was built before 1985, it is very likely that it is insulated with asbestos-containing materials, as they were widely used between 1920 and 1985. These insulations were most commonly sold under the trade name Zonolite Attic Insulation, but also under other names and brands in Canada. Although harmless in their inert state, they become hazardous when cut, degraded or fragmented.
This can happen during renovation or remodeling work, for example. The asbestos fibers are then dispersed in the air. They can then infiltrate the lungs of the occupants and infect them. Simply moving or handling materials can release fibres into the air. These light, highly volatile fibres will remain in the environment. Each time they are moved around the room, they are re-suspended and can be inhaled.
